The table

The rooms look different now. So do the tables.

Some years there is a banana menorah. But when the candles are lit and the first words are said, there is something familiar to step into, and it was there long before any of us.

Some of the voices that said these words first are not at the table anymore. The words are.

Eight Nights is a place for a child inside that. The same eight evenings their great-grandparents had, with something of their own to do at the table.

Eight Nights: the kraft box in its navy sleeve, on a kitchen chair.

The eight nights

1

Give it a spin.

A real painted wood dreidel (one for Little, two for Big). The gelt is your department.

2

Made by you.

A dreidel they paint themselves. It is not for them. They find out who it's for on night five.

3

One more page.

A Hanukkah book for their age, read while the candles are tall.

4

Everybody in.

A family game in a tin. Grown-ups included. Youngest goes first.

5

Made to give.

Kraft, twine, a tag and stickers, all in the parcel. They wrap the dreidel from night two and hand it across the table.

6

Draw the table.

A Hanukkah coloring tablecloth big enough for everyone, and crayons. Don't stay in the lines.

7

Get silly.

Build the ugliest menorah in the house from nine of anything you already own. The parcel is the card and a ribbon for the worst; the nonsense is the point.

8

See you next year.

Their own kids' menorah, with candles. Next year, they light it.

The rule, printed on the first thing they see: wait until the candles are lit.

Ten Thousand Villages · Jewish Educational Toys · Ner Mitzvah · Hachette · Sourcebooks · Creative Crayons Workshop

What you supply: the candles for your own menorah, the gelt, and nine of anything for night seven. Everything else arrives in the box.

The four cards from Eight Nights, filled in: the rule, a note from Grandma, who was at the table and the one thing to remember, and a child's drawing of the table.

What you keep

One card a year.

On the last night there is one card to fill in. Who was at the table. The one thing to remember. A drawing on the back, if that is what happened. It goes into an envelope marked For next year, and the envelope goes wherever the menorah goes.

This is how a family becomes a tradition. You write it down.

Open it next December, before the first candle. Then start again.

The edition

Little or Big.

The family nights are the same in both; the dreidel, the book and the game are picked for the hands that open them. Five and still being read to? Little. Five and reading along? Big.

Two kids at the table? Add a second seat, $60: their own dreidel, craft, book, crayons and menorah (nights 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8) plus their own card. The game, the giving kit, the tablecloth and night seven are shared.

Sending it to grandchildren? Add a note at checkout. It goes on the first card they see, in handwriting.

Shipping? Included, anywhere in the US. Every box ships November 25 by tracked ground and lands by December 3, the day before the first candle. If yours is late, write to me and I'll make it right.

Every year? Eight Nights comes back each Hanukkah with new parcels. Your box is numbered, and next year's edition goes to the same families first.
